Are you working on any projects within the community? If yes, what is the project and why is it important to you?
“I'm working with the Fenway Community Center to launch the Fenway Farmers Market, a project that aims to provide equitable food access to high quality and locally-grown produce for the neighborhood’s diverse population. The market will also serve as a community space, aligning with the mission of the Fenway Community Center to “provide a gathering place to share information, deliver programs, and provide services that enrich the lives of all Fenway residents”. I am developing a comprehensive market plan, including community asset mapping, grant research, and ensuring the inclusion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Healthy Initiatives Program (HIP), in order to design a market that is representative of the population it will serve. This project is important to me because I believe that food justice is a human right, an important part of civic engagement, and a way to connect with culture, family, and friends."
2. What is a cause/anything you are passionate about sharing?
“Food Sovereignty! Democratizing food access is necessary for racial justice, environmental sustainability, and worker, women, and immigrant rights."
3. Do you have any recommendations of what we as a community or as individuals can do to support this cause and learn more?
“Reach out to community-led food justice oriented organizations in your neighborhood."
4. Are there any resources you want to share about the cause?
- The book "Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land" by Leah Penniman
