Small Acts Make Big Differences

International Women’s Day is a day to recognize women’s history over the years, and show love to all the women who support each other.  Based on insights from members of Women’s Higher Education Now (WHEN), this article sheds light on how even small acts of kindness and support significantly contribute to creating an empowering world for women. Anoushka Madan's story of going to the restroom with a friend for safety, Talia Khorassani's experience of a friend meticulously re-tieing her dress bow, and Cora Cunningham's appreciation for motivational messages underscore the importance of companionship, attention to detail, and emotional uplift in nurturing a supportive educational community.

These actions, though seemingly minor, underscore a profound commitment to each other's well-being and success. Abby Stern's habit of carrying alcohol wipes in her purse to prevent friends from accepting drinks from strangers, Wendy Lam's careful adjustment of a friend's pendant, and Zoe Dill's gratitude for a ginger ale during sickness while seeming small are all acts that make women feel seen and empowered at times of vulnerability. Furthermore, Trisha Musall's practice of sharing locations with friends for a sense of security echoes a digital-age adaptation of community and safety, painting a picture of a network that operates on the principles of mutual care, vigilance, and unconditional support.

The collective experiences of WHEN members emphasize that the fabric of women's support networks is woven from the threads of these seemingly small acts. Each gesture of care and attention builds a stronger, more resilient community, highlighting that empowerment and safety in the journeys of women are deeply rooted in the everyday acts of kindness and solidarity.
